HDL: High Density Lipids: This
cholesterol or "good
cholesterol". It is called
"good" because it protects
against cardiovascular diseases.
Scientist believe that having
high levels of HDL cholesterol
is beneficial, because if they
“work” as garbage collectors
around, travelling through blood
collect "bad" cholesterol from
the plates of blood vessels and
they are transported to the
liver to be destroyed by
enzymes.
The refore, high amounts of HDL
are better. We have linked low
levels of HDL (especially under
40) with an increase risk for
heart disease, while values over
60, protect against these
diseases.
The Total Cholesterol is the sum
of both.
